The impact of dollarisation on economic growth, investment, and trade

Dissertation topic:
The impact of dollarisation on economic growth, investment, and trade

Disertation abstract:
Dollarisation has been extensively debated and largely promoted as a monetary and exchange rate policy alternative for small emerging economies. Arguments in favour and against dollarisation are commonly based on theory, while the literature recognizes the scarcity of empirical results on the topic. This study evaluates over two decades of dollarisation experience from small emerging economies. Our findings show that dollarisation is associated with similar economic growth levels compared to other exchange rate regimes. Nonetheless, dollarised countries enjoy higher investment and, potentially, lower trade levels. Our findings contradict a great share of existing literature with regards to the benefits of dollarisation in terms of economic growth and trade. We also show how dollarisation has performed in comparison to other exchange rate regimes, individually, where currency board arrangements appear to produce superior economic outcomes.
