03.05.2022 - Guest lecture: Value for money and assessment of public investments
Martin Haluš of Slovak's Ministry of Finance will be a Public Finance guest lecturer today (3rd May) at 14:00 in room 314.
The title of the lecture is "Value for money: Assessment of public investment projects". Why do we spend so much money and get so poor results in healthcare or education? Which investment projects have the best value for money? How people value a green park next to their house?
Martin Haluš graduated from Comenius University Bratislava in 2010. With a genuine interest in public policy he started working at Institute for Financial Policy at the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak republic as an environmental and energy analyst. He gained his second master in specialized economic analysis from Barcelona Graduate School of Economics in 2013. As an ad-hoc consultant for OECD, he worked on regional disparities of the Slovak economy and its resource efficiency. In 2016, he became chief economist and director of Institute for Environmental Policy. Since 2021 he is acting as a director of Value for money Division focusing on public investment projects appraisals.
Looking forward to interesting lecture and discussion later today.
19.06.2020 - Thesis topics in public finance
Recently improved public finance data availability, including for Czech municipalities, creates opportunities for research as well as undergraduate and masters theses.
The background information on the data and tools for using in R are available here, drawing on the Státní pokladna system from the Ministry of Finance.
The data has been used recently in an analysis in relation to COVID-19 crisis, as covered by ihned.cz and irozhlas.cz.
Using the data sets and under the supervision of Petr Janský and Petr Bouchal, students can address a number of research questions, some of them related to COVID-19 crisis.
Students interested in writing a thesis in public finance can propose their own topic or pick one from this list and write an email to both Petr Janský (petr.jansky@fsv.cuni.cz) and Petr Bouchal (pbouchal@gmail.com, Github, Twitter, blog).

30.09.2018 - Public Economics Seminar: Where does your money go?
All researchers and students are warmly invited to the Public Economics Seminar this Monday 1 October between 12:30 and 13:50 in room 105 at IES. Our researchers are among the finalists of the EU Datathon 2018. The team is led by researchers Petr Janský, Miroslav Palanský, and Jiří Skuhrovec. Their TenderHaven.EU sheds new light on European public procurement tenders and their suppliers, with a particular focus on companies linked to tax havens. You can now access TenderHaven.EU online and see "where your money goes". It is a work in progress so any feedback will be appreciated by the authors, who invite you for their presentation on Monday 1st October at 12:30 in room 105 (with the final event taking place on Tuesday 2nd October in Brussels). TenderHaven.EU presents results on the basis of Datlab's public procurement and company ownership data that researchers are working on as part of the GA ČR project Tax havens and financial secrecy.
