The thesis describes the Switzerland’s attitude towards the European Union, examines their mutual cooperation based on bilateral agreements, and by means of macroeconomic indicators analyses its current economic situation. The aim of the thesis is to understand Swiss euroscepticism and disclose its reasons with the help of historical evolution, political institutions and economic performance of the country. The text of the individual chapters seeks to illustrate that the Switzerland is in reality quite strongly integrated and successively accepts the part of the European legislation. But as a passive member of the Union, the country doesn’t have the possibility to participate in shaping and approving the laws. The advantage of the bilateral way is that it offers to Switzerland the opportunity to negotiate the exception considering its specifics and interests. Such an approach involves the hard discussions and its result is often unsure because of the dependency on voting of the Swiss people. The conclusion of the thesis thus stays open submitting the fact that nowadays Switzerland prefers cooperation outside the European Union. But there is no exclusion that in the future its attitude will be changed.
