Abstract: | This thesis presents the topic of municipal waste management in the Czech Republic and describes the current trends within this area. We analyse the data on the generation and treatment of municipal solid waste in the Czech Republic and then we compare several waste indicators in the EU countries. The main goal of the thesis is to describe the relationship between municipal solid waste generation (MSW) and socio-economic factors. In order to identify the variables that might have a significant impact on the generation of MSW, we carry out a panel data regression using data from 28 EU countries over a time period from 1995 to 2017. We present four model specifications that were created based on the studied research articles. Our findings suggest that GDP and income have a significant positive impact on MSW generation, which is in accordance with the majority of research works. On the other hand, two other significant variables, population and density, are estimated to be negatively related to MSW production. Moreover, urbanization and unemployment rate result to be insignificant. |
