Abstract: This thesis studies the relationship between four chosen Sustainable Development Goals and GDP
growth in 27 EU countries. The data from WDI database was utilized to estimate the effect of
education, health, inequality, and poverty on the dependent variable for the period of 30 years
(1990-2019) using fixed-effects and random-effects panel data models. To conduct the analysis,
the sample of countries was divided according to the time they joined the EU: earlier and later
members. It was found that poverty alleviation has no significant relationship with economic
growth. For the earlier members of the EU, the estimation showed that economic growth is
associated with higher inequality levels, though this was not a relevant observation for the later
members. No significant relationship was found between health and economic growth, contrarily,
education is significantly associated with economic growth.
