Abstract: This thesis analyzed influence of hospital structural indicators on cost of hospital care in the Czech Republic. It contributes to the relatively scarce literature
on the Czech hospitals efficiency and aims to find out, whether findings of foreign literature are applicable in the Czech Republic. The thesis is unique in
the type of data used, it is the first patient-level data analysis on this topic in
the Czech Republic.
Length of stay was used as a proxy for cost. Two models were used to
separate influence of patient characteristics from hospital structural factors
influence. Author used negative binomial multilevel model with EDV in the
second stage in combination with negative binomial cluster robust regression.
Author managed to confirm findings of foreign in the literature on optimal
size of hospitals, influence of teaching and research and of CEO education on
hospital cost efficiency. Results also confirm current Czech literature findings.
