Abstract: In this paper we were discussing the role and character of European support of large commercial aircraft manufacturing industry as a representative high-technology industry. First we introduced some theoretical approaches relevant to the problem of role of high-technology industries in modern economies and then we applied the theoretical framework to our case industry. We have found that the large commercial aircraft manufacturing industry meets almost perfectly all the assumptions of this framework. By analysing the historical development of support we have found the fundamental long-term trends which are influencing the contemporary competitiveness of European industry. Most notably we have found the great influence of traditional rivalry between US and European manufacturers. With the help of our theoretical framework and with the knowledge of the basic long-term and also new emerging influences we have concluded that there are still possibilities for the future development of European system of support of the industry, mainly in the area of the so called indirect support.
