Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the collateral within the bank loan involvement and its role in measuring the risks arising from these transactions. The whole paper is primarily divided into two blocks. First block analyses, whether the collateral instruments fulfilled their role as protector of creditors` rights during the transition period of the Czech economics and tries to point out the main causes of proved defects. The second focus of the thesis is an analysis of regulatory treatment of collateral under the terms of prudential behavior of banks, both from the point of view from current regulation specified by the Czech National Bank and from international regulations, which the Czech Republic already partially accepted or the acceptation is expected.
