Abstract: This paper analyzes the effect of various factors on the extent of corruption and rent seeking in transition countries. It concentrates mainly on the influence of low quality of the institutional framework on the level of corruption in these countries, but it does not exclude even other important determinants of economic character (transition path, privatization or foreign direct investment) or non-economic aspects (civil society, cultural and historical differences among countries). We study all mentioned factors primarily in common context of the transition process. Then we follow their influence on the evolution of the level of corruption in the Czech Republic and finally we introduce some recommendations, which should help to restrict corruption activities.
