Abstract: The author concentrates on economic approach to crime. Concept of rational offender and basic models of rational criminal behavior are discussed in the first part of his work. Empirical testing of these models is also briefly mentioned. Limits of economic approach to crime are discussed in part two, in which the author also proposes enrichment of variables influencing criminal behavior. The author stresses importance of psychic costs of crime and influence of morality and presents modification of the original Becker’s model. Then the author tries to incorporate the theory of rational offender to wider area of social sciences. Discussion about optimal ways of combating crime with enriched offender is presented at the end.
