Abstract: This thesis aims to present interdisciplinary science of happiness, which lures a lot of attention by social scientists and lay public in recent years. Main stress is put on the role of economics in the problematics of happiness. The first part deals with definition of happiness and the historical development of approaches related to this matter. Second part addresses meassuring of happiness and analyze related issues. Following part targets the phenomenon of, so called, treadmill effect and Easterlin paradox. Contrast, aspirations, and the relation of GDP and happiness are discussed in greater detail. Fourth part covers main sources of happiness with the stress put on a familly and interpersonal relationships.
