Abstract: The bachelor thesis “Migration in a Context of Sweden‘s Social System“ focuses on immigration to Sweden. Although, Sweden used to be a poor agrarian country until the beginning of the 20th century; nowaday it belongs to one of the wealthiest economies in the world. Industrialization and neutrality in both World Wars entailed rapid economic growth that created a demand for a huge amount of workforce. In order to sustain the positive growth rate Sweden, which is a country relatively poor in inhabitants, was bound to look for workforce abroad. The contract work migration, typical for Sweden since the end of the WWII, was replaced by the inflows of refugees and asylum seekers in the mid-1970s. This pattern has prevailed until the present day. The wide national mix of immigrants brought about the transformation of the Swedish society into a heterogenous one and brought about integration problems. This bachelor thesis analyses immigration flows, development of immigration policy and integration of immigrants in Sweden. It also tries to estimate the impact of immigration on the living standard and unemployment in Sweden.
