Abstract: The main function of maternal leave is to protect and subsidize mothers of young
children. This is mainly achieved by the system of job protection and the system of paid
benefits. The amount of time spent on maternal leave out of the job market, however, causes an
increase in human capital loss. In the main part of this thesis, we investigate decision patterns
of mothers of young children who wish to work. Using methods of linear probability, probit
and logit models on LFS data set, we test the hypotheses that state a relationship between
probability of search for a job and characteristics of mothers and her children. We conclude that
there is a significant relationship between a number of children and probability of search for a
job. We also find out that there is a connection between the age of the youngest child and
probability of mother to search for a job. Moreover, we find out that between the first and the
second year as well as between the second and third year of child’s age the change in the
probability of search for a job is the highest.
