Abstract: Indicative planning is studied in wider economic, social, historical and cultural context with an emphasis on French economic thinking and historical circumstances. From 1946 to 2003, principles, methods, tools and institutions of indicative planning experienced an important evolution characterized by rising decentralization and a shift towards so called "strategic planning". France had to cope especially with limited possibilities of planning in open economy. Through the role of France in construction of the European Union, specific evolution of French economic policy after WW2 influenced also institutions of the EU and principles of its economic policies.
