Abstract: This paper deals with a funding of institutions of higher education in United States of America. Its main purpose is to provide a reader with basic informations on how colleges and universities are funded and to establish a background for that system in economic theory. Because of great extensiveness of the subject, I focused on one particular university -- Cornell University in New York State.
At the beginning, I try to identify all the resources which help to fund colleges and universities and make a justification for their role in the higeher education system. After a brief introduction into an environment of higher education institutions in United States, I deal with particular revenues and expenses which Cornell University is facing. The final part of this paper tries to look closer on how students pay for their education and which ways they can choose to meet their expenses.
